A Hidden River
Philadelphia, PA

Margie Ruddick has developed a design that builds on the original plans for the park, prepared by the Delta Group. Using a minimal palette and a sustainable approach, the design creates a space for recreation, contemplation, for arts events as well as civic functions. The park contains a crescent-shaped space for sunning, playing, and enjoying the views to the south; an urban terrace that can act as the City's front door at the river's edge; a willowy landscape that terraces down to a tidal pool, where kayaks and other small boats can put in. The overall park plan relates to adjacent rail line while providing necessary buffering; it also combines native plantings with ornamental arrangements that bring attention the monumental civic spaces created by the river, by the overhead bridges, and by the august architecture of the Post Office and train station across the river.
