The Blue Thread proposes a system for urban stormwater management that stretches through the linear site from the center of Queens Plaza to its termination at the waterfront, collecting, detaining, and filtering stormwater along its length. The Blue Thread uses directed stormwater flows and vegetated gravel detention beds, integrating stormwater from outfalls from the Queensboro Bridge and the elevated subway stations. Irrigating slivers of green, patchwork gardens, and a potential nursery in Baby Park, the Blue Thread will support growth on the site, providing layers of vegetation to clean air and stormwater and mitigate noise pollution. The system is powered solely through gravity, with the exception of certain points that may integrate sculptural water elements. |

The Bike Path is composed of the green threads that will flourish with water from the Blue Thread. The medians of Queens Plaza can become green threads of several layers of filtering vegetation to mitigate vehicle air, noise, and visual pollution. Low-maintenance and pollution-tolerant plants separate pedestrians from up to 14 lanes of traffic. |
