In one of the few places in the world where the desert meets the sea, this landscape blurs the line between the built and the natural environment, bringing the desert landscape into the interior spaces of the compound. Forms and materials were created and selected to weather with the harsh environmental conditions.

The desert climate informs spaces, paving and planting.

In the courtyard, water flows along one wall of the building and rests in a plane beneath the outdoor pavilion.

This wall acts as a dam for all of the storm water; water from uphill is directed into the runnel at the base of the wall. The holes in the pavers underfoot open to a trench drain.

We thought of the center of the site as a void, around which the buildings are arrayed. The desert landscape is brought into the central courtyard, using the erratic way plants occur in the wild.

Landscape and architecture merge to create flowing spaces through the compound.
