Battery Park City Recreation Park

This 2.5 acre park with playing fields, a shaded overlook, and lush plantings beside the Hudson River provided much needed space for football, softball, and Little League sports. Originally intended as an interim park, it was composed of materials that have been recycled from other parks at Battery Park City.

Concrete planters and stone dust paving were influenced by the large scale and constructed materials of the city.

The plantings create the feeling of an oldfield, where growth and change are the key to the design.

The bench at the overlook was made from a leftover piece of seawall used at the nearby waterfront, and mounted on bluestone.

Leftover beams from the landfill were used to create bleachers; concrete from a sidewalk that had to be removed to create the park was sawcut and installed as a drylaid retaining wall.

Plants were chosen that can tolerate the harsh and salty conditions of the site, such as Cedars, grasses, and Bayberry.
