MONTAUK BLUFF

MONTAUK, NY

Perched over the Atlantic Ocean in Montauk, Long Island, this family compound built on the language of the architecture - inspired by the owner’s Spanish roots - to create a singular oceanfront landscape. The pool is sited inboard of the house, which looks out over the bluff and ocean; this breaks with the tradition of siting pools to capitalize on the primary view. Butting the pool up to the back wall of the house, the design created a secondary, more private world for the pool. The mostly fragrant plantings - catmint, lavender, native grasses, bayberry - surround the pool area, sheltered from the harsh ocean winds.

The bluff looking out over the ocean was completely restored after construction of the house, using endemic plants such as Hudsonia and Switchgrass.
